Music Curriculum
"Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.  Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.  Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.  For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does."  Psalm 33:1-4

Music is important to the LORD, and so music is important at Zion Lutheran School. God is praised with music in every classroom each and every day.  We sing during Word of God classes, we sing during weekly chapel services, we prepare music for worship at Zion Lutheran Church, we prepare a special worship service for each Christmas, and we put on musicals and talent shows.  Zion Lutheran School has a very strong music program.

Formal Music
Grades 3K/4K and 5K-2: Children love to sing.  In these early childhood education classrooms time is set aside each day to sing and dance and do actions.  They regularly prepare songs of praise together for worship at Zion Lutheran Church.  Miss Fickau also introduces the Sing and Make Music curriculum in the 5K-2 classroom.  The focus here is on Sounds and Silences, Louds and Softs, and playing together in simple rhythm.

Grades 3-4:  As this classroom prepares songs for worship, much focus is placed on strong vocal skills, tone and vowel placement, breathing support, diction etc.  Mrs. Hahm extends those lessons through preparation for other singing events at school.  We also study music theory using Sing and Make Music.  The standard at this level focuses mainly on notation and rhythms.  Each child will regularly use a rhythm instrument, tone chimes, recorder, or the voice to put what they are learning into practice and create an excitment and love for music.

Grades 5-8:  This level also prepares songs for worship at Zion Lutheran Church.  We build off of the strong foundation set in the lower grades and focus greatly on good vocal technique.  We add to that skill part-singing and harmony.  As often as possible, we use students to accompany our music.  The year is then divided into quarters studying a rotation of Music Theory, Christmas Service preparation, Bethoven's Wig, Symphony Instruments, Famous Composers, Famous Hymns, Symbols in Lutheran Worship and Liturgies in Christian Worship, A Lutheran Hymnal.
